Dakota Hammell was an ordinary teenager until he ran away from home at the age of sixteen, but after being brutally beaten, raped and left for dead, there seems to be little hope in his life—that is, until a man claiming to be a psychologist walks into the alleyway he’s lying near-dead in and offers him a second chance at life. John tells Dakota he can stay with him as long as he wants, but there’s a catch For each day he stays, he has to write a journal entry about his life, his problems, and his potential future. With little choice, Dakota agrees, but is wary of the situation, as past experience with strangers has shown to have negative effects. But when things with John begin to work out and life becomes nothing out of the ordinary, his heart finally begins to open and his journey can finally be told.
A story of hope, of healing, and ultimately, of friendship, The Diary of Dakota Hammell offers a brief glimpse into a life of fractured teenager who has lost everything but his ability to write.

I liked the way this book was set up as a diary. It's not the first book to use this format, but it uses it well and allows an intimacy with the characters you don't normally get with other formats. I liked the slow reveal of Dakota's past and the imagery used was rather poignant in many instances. I was confused at several points about Dakota's age, after first thinking he was a minor, then later it was revealed he was closer to 19/20, then later it's stated that he's 18. The ending felt rushed, like the author needed to wrap this up and ran out of ideas. I thought a couple of pretty major plot points were not handled well, such as why the police weren't called or why any doctor, even just psychologist, would take a clearly severely injured person home instead of straight to the hospital. No, John waits until the following day to take Dakota to the hospital. The part that really annoyed me at the end and made me dislike John, Dakota's "savior", was the reveal that John had transcribed Dakota's diary and given it to a publisher without Dakota's knowledge or consent, and Dakota's just okay with that? Like I said, rushed ending. Overall, I liked it okay but the ending and the plot holes didn't make much sense. 2.5 stars.Product details

The Diary of Dakota Hammell edition by Kody Boye Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
When you're reading this you don't know how John (the saver) is going to work into Dakota's future. Then, at the end, the relationship seems unrequited somehow and you're not sure why Dakota is going where he's going.
A very interesting concept and well written at that. We are only given a one-sided view into Dakota's thoughts as he writes to himself. Dakota begins to open up to John as well as himself as he discovers more and more about himself. There's great depth in Dakota's character, however we are left hanging with some questions left unanswered. Still, a good read.
Great short story. I actually wish it were a novel. The main character Dakota is a run away with a troubled past that finds someone that cares about him. I couldn't put this book down and would recommend it to anyone. I find that many young gay men can relate to Dakota's life and heart aches. Very touching.
This book was very different from what I expected and yet I also enjoyed it very much. It was thought provoking and felt that it was written by someone much older. By that I mean the insight and observations were mature but still within the age of the character.
My only wish was that it kept going so I could find out if he ended up happy.
This story caught my attention from the beginning and held it to the finish. I kept expecting the two main characters become romantically involved and was happy to see it not happen. It did leave unanswered questions though. How did the mom die? Was she killed by the serial killer? Why was the killer mentioned at all if it wasn't an avenue to explore? All things told, this was a good story.
I have only written a few reviews on books that I have read via . But I have to tell you this Book "The Diary of Dakota Hammell" deserves all the praise that this reader can give it! I found the story compelling, heartfelt and saddening.
To think that anyone could do that to a young man, especially in this day and age. It's a sad statement for our times! I hope that you will please down load and read this book, I can't believe that any parent/grandparent/brother or sister can walk away feeling like they have wasted their time. Don't look for sex, wild orgies, etc. that is not what this story is about!
John is a true hero and a man that I would be proud to call my friend. Thank you John for caring enough to be more than just a passer by!
Jon
An interesting tale told in a different way. When the story is over everything appears to be worked out. But I want to know more. More about the people. More about what happened before to make them this way and more about where it goes from here. You are made to care about Dakota and everyone around him.
